Kentucky Occupation Safety and Health Surveillance Program
Workplace injuries and illnesses are a major cause for concern for Kentucky workers and are preventable through the development of prevention strategies based on occupational injury and illness surveillance data.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has funded the Kentucky Department for Public Health and the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center at the University of Kentucky, College of Public Health to conduct surveillance of fatal and nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses.
The goals of the KOSHS program are to:
- Identify worker populations and work environments at risk for occupational injuries and illnesses
- Develop state occupational safety and health data dissemination strategies to reduce Kentucky occupational injuries
The aims of the KOSHS program are to:
- Conduct surveillance of 14 occupational injury and illness indicators
- Establish a statewide consortium to raise awareness of occupational injuries at the local and state levels
- Analyze and disseminate surveillance data to those in a position to effect change
- Develop injury prevention strategies
KOSHS conducts surveillance research on:

- Fatal Work Injuries (FACE program)

- Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Workers
